Campbell University is a private university founded in 1887 by Baptist minister, J.A. Campbell. It currently has a student enrollment of 6,185 and the main campus is situated on 850 acres in Buies Creek, North Carolina, USA.

The campus has fifteen (15) dormitories/apartment buildings total. Indoor air quality and mechanical issues were reported in two of these student housing facilities and the university knew they needed to be addressed.

The Concern

The Campbell University facility team had two (2) specific dormitories (Bob Barker and Faculty Memorial Commons) that were not cooling the space properly for years. The facility team did not have the manpower and/or resources to effectively clean the systems in an expedited manner.

Issues faced by Campbell University included:

  • Low Air Flow
  • Musty Odors
  • Mold Related Concerns
  • High Work Order Requests
  • Temperature & Comfort Concerns
  • High Energy Bills

PURE-Steam cleaning program

Campbell University reached out to Pure Air Control Services to help with their airflow issues within the two dormitories

Campbell University reached out to Pure Air Control Services to help with their airflow issues within the two dormitories. Pure Air Control Services performed their PURE-Steam cleaning program, within the one hundred and forty six (146) Fan Coil Units (FCU) installed at the facility.

This process was to effectively PURE-Steam clean the coils (cooling and reheat), while removing the blower housing and clean the interior fins, in order to remove latent dirty that had been stuck on the fins for quite some time.

Benefits of the PURE-Steam Coil Cleaning Process include:

  • Sanitizes the coils / blower assembly
  • Removes latent debris from deep within the coils
  • Creates improved air flow
  • Creates better cooling capacity
  • Saves Energy (typically .22 cents per sq ft)
  • Improves indoor air quality (IAQ)
  • Reduces HVAC-related work orders
  • Extends HVAC equipment

The Results

The dormitories were fully operational during the HVAC Hygienic PURE-Steam cleaning process, with no disruption to students or staff.

Pure Air Control’s Building Remediation Sciences (BRS) team members worked closely with the university’s facility team, in order to tackle any logistical concerns with occupants. The entire process improved airflow and cooling capacity within each and every fan coil unit (FCU) to the benefit of better indoor air quality (IAQ) for students residing there.
