The Federation of German Heating Industry (BDH) sees the National Hydrogen Strategy (NSW) adopted by the Federal Cabinet as a positive move, as it creates a suitable framework for the future generation, transport, and use of hydrogen.

National Hydrogen Strategy (NSW)

With the NSW, the federal government is sending a strong signal for the achievement of the ambitious 2030 climate targets,” commented BDH President Uwe Glock, adding “This means that climate-neutral energy sources such as hydrogen will in future also contribute to the decarbonization of the heating market, as will the accelerated modernization of outdated systems.

Uwe Glock further said, “The BDH association rates positively that the NSW is focusing on CO2 - neutral ‘green’ hydrogen, but at the same time recognizes sustainable ‘blue’ or ‘turquoise’ hydrogen as transition technologies. With a view to the ambitious climate goals, no CO2 - neutral option should be excluded.”

Use of hydrogen in heating systems

The National Hydrogen Strategy (NSW) also includes the use of hydrogen in the heating market

With regard to the allocation of the scarce resource - hydrogen, the BDH advocates a market-based and technology-open approach. Logically, the National Hydrogen Strategy (NSW) also includes the use of hydrogen in the heating market. “After all, around a third of German final energy consumption is used for heating and hot water preparation”, explains BDH Managing Director, Andreas Lücke.

Our industry is already preparing technologically for the use of hydrogen in highly efficient heating systems and therefore, welcomes the inclusion of the heating market in the NSW in terms of planning security,” adds Lücke.

Development of the hydrogen strategy

The National Hydrogen Strategy (NSW) receives content-related support from the National Hydrogen Council. Viessmann, represented by Co-CEO, Maximilian Viessmann, will be a member of the council from the ranks of the BDH. In this way, the concerns of the heating market can be fully incorporated into the implementation and development of the hydrogen strategy.
