Vons-Safeway-Albertsons has over 2,200 stores in the U.S.A., across 33 US states. It is the largest supermarket chain in California, and is among the largest grocers in the world. They have quietly built one of the most impressive environmental records of any retailer in the United States of America.
Vons-Safeway-Albertsons has already replaced a significant amount of its shaded pole fan motors with electronically commutated motors. Vons-Safeway-Albertsons evaluated QM Power’s Q-Sync® motors to further drive energy savings.

The demonstration involved conducting a detailed energy audit of the store’s refrigeration equipment to analyze current energy usage.
The audit was followed by a head-to-head comparison to measure total energy reduction in an egg case after replacing both a Shaded Pole motor and an Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) with the Q-Sync motor.
Results
Independent measurement and verification performed at a Vons store in San Diego, California confirmed Q-Sync® as the highest efficiency motor for commercial refrigeration applications.
Q-Sync® motors produced 38% fewer watts and 68% fewer amps than the incumbent ECM motor and used 71% fewer watts and 75% fewer amps than incumbent Shaded Pole Motors.
Outcome
The reduction in energy usage from retrofitting the case with a Q-Sync® motor combined with the high potential for energy savings throughout the store prompted Vons-Safeway-Albertsons to retrofit a total of 173 evaporator motors (in both refrigerators and freezers) with higher efficiency Q-Sync® motors.
