Carrefour has achieved a notable milestone in energy reduction since 2019, enhancing its HVAC market presence. The company's strategic initiatives, including installing doors on refrigerated units, adopting LED lighting, and revamping refrigeration plants, have significantly lowered energy consumption.
By 2024, Carrefour achieved a 48% reduction in direct GHG emissions (scopes 1 and 2) compared to 2019, putting it ahead of its target of a 50% reduction by 2040.
Innovative Initiatives
The primary contributor to Carrefour's emissions is indirect emissions. To address this, the company has embarked on three innovative initiatives. It promotes a plant-based diet among customers through targeted promotions and awareness campaigns. Furthermore, it requires its top 100 suppliers to align with a certified 1.5°C trajectory by 2026, or face delisting.
Additionally, Carrefour supports 150 SME suppliers in measuring commitments and developing transition plans using the ACT assessment and the "Act step by step" approach.
Targeted Product Category Initiatives
The report highlights Carrefour's substantial transition plan and transparency in reporting
Carrefour's transition plan, evaluated through the ACT assessment, acknowledges the group's commitment to decarbonization.
The assessment, conducted by EKODEV, underscores the need for more targeted initiatives by product category and promotes broader efforts in the circular economy, reuse, and food waste reduction.

Commitment to Reducing Emissions
Carrefour has demonstrated dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through ambitious pledges. "Carrefour has made ambitious and unprecedented commitments to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and ensures each year with independent third-party organizations that its targets comply with the Paris Agreement," said Carine Kraus, Director of Engagement for Carrefour Group.
The ADEME assessment complements Carrefour's existing certification processes, affirming its pioneering climate-focused endeavors over the last five years.
Driving the Ecological Transition
Carrefour takes significant steps toward an ecology-focused transition, engaging its entire supply chain
As part of its collaboration with ADEME on the ACT methodology, Carrefour takes significant steps toward an ecology-focused transition, engaging its entire supply chain.
"ADEME is fully mobilized alongside all actors who, like the Carrefour Group, are committed with determination to the ecological transition," stated Sylvain Waserman, President of ADEME.
ACT Method: Evaluating Climate Strategies
Established in 2015 by ADEME, the ACT method supports French companies in formulating and assessing climate strategies.
Last year, Carrefour adopted this method as a standard to evaluate its climate strategy among French SME suppliers.
As early as 2019, Carrefour initiated a significant reduction in energy consumption in its stores through the installation of doors on refrigerated units, LED lighting, and the renewal of its refrigeration plants.
These actions have resulted in a 48% reduction in direct GHG emissions (scopes 1 and 2) in 2024 (compared to 2019). Carrefour is therefore ahead of its target of a -50% reduction by 2040 (compared to 2019).
Three pioneering initiatives
As for indirect emissions, which account for the largest share of the Group's emissions now, three pioneering initiatives have been put in place:
- Promoting a more plant-based diet through dedicated promotions and awareness campaigns aimed at its customers;
- Requiring its Top 100 suppliers to adopt a certified 1.5°C trajectory by 2026, failing which they will be delisted;
- Supporting 150 SME suppliers to enable them to measure their commitments and develop transition plans, through the ACT assessment and the "Act step by step" approach.
implementing targeted initiatives by product category
The ACT assessment of Carrefour's transition plan recognizes the Group's efforts in its decarbonization strategy. It is also a key tool for the Group to confirm the effectiveness of the measures implemented and to identify areas for improvement in order to pursue its ambition.
The ACT assessment report, carried out by EKODEV, indicates that Carrefour can go even further in implementing targeted initiatives by product category, as well as the large-scale deployment of measures in favor of the circular economy, reuse, and the fight against food waste. It also specifies that the Carrefour Group has a robust transition plan and high transparency in its reporting.
Greenhouse gas emissions
"Carrefour has made ambitious and unprecedented commitments to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and ensures each year with independent third-party organizations that its targets comply with the Paris Agreement. This assessment by ADEME complements our other certification processes for our climate trajectory and recognizes the Group's pioneering approach over the past 5 years in favor of the climate," said Carine Kraus, Director of Engagement for the Carrefour Group.
Determination of the ecological transition
"A year after the launch of our partnership around the ACT methodology, Carrefour is taking a structuring step by relying on the ACT assessment to engage its entire value chain - from the 100 main suppliers to SMEs - in an ambitious and robust transition approach. ADEME is fully mobilized alongside all actors who, like the Carrefour Group, are committed with determination to the ecological transition," said Sylvain Waserman, President of ADEME.
The ACT method: a key tool for evaluating climate strategies
In 2015, ADEME created the ACT method: an initiative that aims to help French companies of all sizes build and evaluate their climate strategy.
Last year, Carrefour recognized this method as a reference for assessing the climate trajectory of its French SME suppliers.
